Exhibition

Welcome to Hemel Hempstead Scribes
A friendly group of people
who meet every Friday from 11.30 am - 2.30pm
at Bennetts End Community Centre, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, UK.

Exhibition at Hemel Hempstead Library.

We currently have a small exhibition of work on show
at Hemel Hempstead Library.
http://www.hertsdirect.org/services/libraries/findlib/libs/hemThis will run for two weeks from today, 15.4.2013
Do go along and take a look if you can.
There is a range of work on show from our mixed-ability guild members.

The last post showed some of our members paper-weaving work.
Sometimes you just don't have the right glue around for the task in hand, such as that tricky paper-weaving,
or maybe you are not sure which is the right adhesive to use in a given situation.
Wonder no more, help can be found here:

Paper WeavingIn our previous session we were challenged to incorporate paper weaving in to our calligraphy, so Friday brought a batch of our efforts for show-and-tell. Some were exploring the technique for different effects:

And others finding out how this simple method can be used in combination with calligraphy.

Sheila Jessop Exhibition

Welcome to Hemel Hempstead Scribes
A friendly group of people
who meet every Friday from 11.30 am - 2.30pm
at Bennetts End Community Centre, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, UK.

Sheila Jessop 1929-2012

Some HHS members spent a pleasant afternoon on Sunday at a posthumous exhibition of works by local artist Sheila Jessop, which is currently on at the Peter Ingram Gallery, Frogmore Mill, Apsley, Hemel Hempstead, until February 24th 2013.

Sheila trained at Southend School of Art and Leeds College of Art in the late 1940's and taught art for a while. She worked in a range of media and was commissioned to  to make a series of roundels of local characters, which is on display in the Cardiff Central Library, and a set of portraits in relief for St Mary's Hospital, Paddington. She exhibited regularly over the years, was active in local arts groups and instigated a new exhibition space at Hemel Hempstead Hospital.

The exhibition is well worth a visit and, as most items are for sale, this will be the last time that the body of work will be gathered together in one place.

Find out more at www.thepapertrail.org.uk Frogmore Mill is open Tuesday - Friday 10am -4pm

Graceful Envelope Contest

at Bennetts End Community Centre, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, UK.

The Graceful Envelope Contest

The Washington Calligraphers Guild run an annual contest together with the National Association of Letter Carriers in the US. Follow the link to their web site for more information and fantastic inspiration.

http://www.calligraphersguild.org/envelope.html

There is no entry fee and this year's theme is "A World of Change" with a deadline of February 25th 2013, so there is still time to submit your entry. Decorated envelopes make a very achievable short project, are great fun to make, and are much appreciated by the recipient and postman alike.

Jean Wilson creates one-of-a-kind envelopes and her blog at http://pushingtheenvelopes.blogspot.co.uk/ is another mine of inspiration and eye candy.

This week's picture of HHS members work shows how a practice piece can easily be turned in to a practical item. this book mark has a ribbon threaded through a hole with a punched eyelet to protect the laminated paper. Quotation from Lily Tomlin.

Monograms and Ciphers

Welcome to Hemel Hempstead Scribes
A friendly group of people
who meet every Friday from 11.30 am - 2.30pm
at Bennetts End Community Centre, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, UK.

Monograms and Ciphers

Each week we have the choice of working on our own projects or the topic set by our tutor and we get to see the results of everybody's labours over the preceding week.

Last week the set subject was Monograms and Ciphers. Both are similar and used interchangeably as a method of representing a set of initials, either of an individual, couple, or entity such as a company.

In a monogram the letters are intertwined while in a cipher the letters are separated.

Here is a lovely copperplate monogram.

Next week: Letterheads and Business Cards.

This broadsheet was written in
gouache with a chalk background added.
The quote is by Charles M Schulz.
